High Artist Spotlight: Alex Hendrickson

Alex is a fulltime student in his early 20's pursuing a BFA in Illustration. Inspired from an early age by the drawings and paintings of his family, he has been drawing for as long as he can remember. However, it is only in the past few years that Alex has begun seriously pursuing a career in digital illustration, hoping to work in the industry of concept artwork or graphic design.

We recently caught up with Alex after High Art 2023 to learn more about his most recent inspirations:

Where do you find your creative inspiration?
The work of my friends and artists I look up to. As well as through media I enjoy, especially those with Gothic influence.

Why do you do what you do?
I think trying to create things that are truly wonderful is contantly motivational. I want to be able to create the kind of art that inspired me to become an artist, and that keeps inspiring me to continue today.

What art/artist do you most identify with?
Artists who try new things and experiment in art.

What themes do you pursue the most?
Obsessive details, evil, monsters, and cute too

What role does an artist have in society?
I thin that artists have real power to spread progress and positivity throughout the world. Art is an incredibally powerful medium of emotion, and its influence can have true effects for the spread of positive change. Every form of entertainment is also influenced by art, if it is not art already. Art also plays a role in many facits of the modern world besides beauty and entertainment, like architecture and design. I think art is an integral part of the human experience that has a much larger place in our lives than many don't realise.

What is your artistic outlook on life?
I try to see things openly and not take them for granted. I'm inspired by the people and art I surround myself with, and allow myself to create in ways that are true to me.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Create what you want, try to have fun with your work, and USE reference.

Do you listen to music while you are creating? If yes, share the song and artist that you listen to while creating art.
I like music that makes my brain tingle, some songs I listen to all the time are
'Oslo in the Summertime' - of Montreal
'Halah' - Mazzy Star
'Just Like Heaven' - The Cure

What's the best thing about being an artist?
For me, it's having something that is a constant journey throughought the rest of my life. Something that I can practice and grow with forever to create images from my imagination only I can.

What is your dream project?

A personal goal of mine would be creating a piece of art to be used in a game like Dungeons & Dragons, or Magic the Gathering.
