High Artist Spotlight: Gavin Kendo

Gavin Kendo is a self-taught visual artist based in Nairobi, Kenya. His work is centered around real human experiences and emotions that cannot be explained, portrayed using bright colors. He draws his inspiration from his daily life and the people around him. Gavin uses surreal symbology in his art as he believes there is more to life than what is seen. He holds the belief that the true human experience lies within and shows his inner dialogue through the images he creates. Gavin utilizes both traditional and digital media, sometimes both, to add detail that one medium is limited to. His preferred medium for physical paintings is oil paint on canvas.

Where do you find your creative inspiration?

I’m deeply inspired by my emotions and beautiful visuals from movies and music videos.

Why do you do what you do?

It is the only thing that makes me feel like I’m truly expressing myself.

What art/artist do you most identify with?

@poorteffy on Instagram, Van Gogh, James Jean.

What themes do you pursue the most?

Psychedelic themes, I like to give my unique perspective on life and existence.

What role does an artist have in society?

To inspire, to comfort, to evoke emotion, to think outside the box.

What is your artistic outlook on life?

I believe living your truth is the key to real happiness.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

All I’d tell him is to keep following his heart and trust in himself.

What's the best thing about being an artist?

Having to do something that I consider to be my purpose in life.
