High Artist Spotlight: Jon Swartz

Jon is the older of the Swartz Brothers. Swartz Brothers Art is the partnership between Colorado-based artists Jon and David Swartz. The brothers have always been drawing and painting. Both went to the Creative and Performing Arts high school in Philadelphia, and went on to graduate from Tyler School of Art with degrees in Graphic Design. After college, they decided graphic design wasn't the best fit for them. They found their love for painting again and have been pursuing ever since.Heavily inspired by the natural world, emotional experiences, and the creative process; the Swartz Brothers work in mixed media to create surreal worlds, where the only limit is their imagination.
We recently caught up with Jon after High Art 2022 to learn more about his most recent inspirations:
Where do you find your creative inspiration?
In life there are many things to be inspired by. I think inspiration comes when I take the time to notice the world around me. Whether it be through sounds, conversations, observations, etc. All it takes is for me to be present and willing to put my hands to work on the task of bringing an idea to life.
Why do you do what you do?
I love it, and have always loved it. I have always known that I wanted to be an artist.
What art/artist do you most identify with?
Surrealism and impressionism
What themes do you pursue the most?
The underlying current of energy that lives inside everything. I also love the balance of light and dark, and the sometimes absurd nature of life.
What role does an artist have in society?
I think art can be something that helps people feel good, and also it can help people to change the way they think. I think it is important to push representations of what we believe in as artists, and not what is popular or what sells.
What is your artistic outlook on life?
Find what really feels like your purpose in life, and work hard to bring your purpose to life. Share what you feel. You never know who might need to see that they aren't alone in their feelings.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Don't worry about what other people expect of you. Try to live in a way that will make you proud of what you have done with your life.
Do you listen to music while you are creating? If yes, tell us your favorite song and artist.
Yes. Too many to name. Netherfriends makes really cool cannabis inspired music.
What's the best thing about being an artist?
Learning that what you do does affect people, and hearing how your work has inspired or helped people feel good.
What is your dream project?
Large murals, cannabis product packaging, animated music videos.
