High Artist Spotlight: Laura Junge

Laura Lee Junge is a rising star in the American art world, captivating audiences with her unique and intoxicating style. Drawing inspiration from her life experiences, Junge believes that the most honest painting comes from a deep personal understanding. This philosophy shines through in her canvas, sculpted and mixed media works, which blend a variety of styles into what critics have dubbed "surrealistic expressionism".Junge's childhood years spent in both Minnesota and Oklahoma instilled in her a fascination with movement, a theme that can be seen throughout her artwork. From a floral still life to musical expression and jaded bar scenes, her works exude a fluidity and energy that defy the boundaries of the canvas. More recently, Junge’s artistic practice is driven by a love of experimentation and a desire to explore new materials and techniques. Using a wide range of resources including clay, paint, metal and found objects, her mixed media conceptions are full of depth, texture, and visual interest.
We recently caught up with Laura after High Art 2023 to learn more about her most recent inspirations:

Where do you find your creative inspiration?

Everywhere and by working. I am never out of ideas; I am only out of time.

Why do you do what you do?

Mostly because there is something inside of me that needs to create.

What art/artist do you most identify with?

That's hard because I am influenced by so many. If I had to pick, it would be the surrealists like Salvador Dalí.

What themes do you pursue the most?

I love the theme of warriors and interpersonal relationships.

What role does an artist have in society?

To provide a path of escape, inspiration, education, and sometimes a voice for those who cannot speak.

What is your artistic outlook on life?

To constantly be in pursuit of learning and creating.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Try to have a little more confidence in who you are and don't be afraid of making mistakes.

Do you listen to music while you are creating? If yes, share the song and artist that you listen to while creating art.

Music is a necessity for creating the environment in which I work best.

What's the best thing about being an artist?

Loving what I do!

What is your dream project?

I would love to create a large scale (like really big) mural in a public space.
