High Artist spotlight: Neil Kesterson

Why does Neil Kesterson create art? For him it’s as normal as eating or sleeping, and just as necessary. Neil constantly sees images he wants to put on canvas. He sees abstract shapes and color, and especially light, and he tries to capture it. His art is a way to deal with and express emotion, and seeks to understand himself and his relation to the world through these images. He is an artist.Instead of sticking to one style, Neil tends to bounce around from one idea to the next, trying different ideas and techniques, sometimes combining them. Many of his paintings are created over the span of several years as he will often re-approach older works that were never finished, or maybe aren’t as visually exciting as previously thought. He states, ''I don’t like to wash over these, but instead I keep adding to them until they feel complete. Sometimes going in a completely different direction or style than was originally imagined. I enjoy this process as it leads to an end product that was not preconceived.''In 2011 Neil made a conscious decision to actively pursue his passion for art. To BE THE ARTIST he always believed he was. Since that time he has steadily created and exhibited his art and has been rewarded with increasing sales and exposure and opportunities. From a very young age Neil had always dreamed of seeing his art in a museum and he recently accomplished this career highlight with a solo exhibit at the St. George Art Museum titled, “Dories; Holding onto History”.
We recently caught up with Neil after High Art 2023 to learn more about his most recent inspirations:

Where do you find your creative inspiration?

Nature for sure! Nature is very abstract and provides endless ideas.

Why do you do what you do?

I ask myself that same question! Creating art is something I must do; it's like breathing.

What art/artist do you most identify with?

I'm inspired by many different artists and don't stick to one style or genre.

What themes do you pursue the most?

Landscapes, both real and imaginary, and the concept of home.

What role does an artist have in society?

I'm not sure I have a good answer for this question. Perhaps to inspire others to see the world in a different way.

What is your artistic outlook on life?

Life is so full of opportunity, energy, and ability to create something from nothing.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don't dwell on the negativity, let it go. The world is an amazing place.

Do you listen to music while you are creating? If yes, share the song and artist that you listen to while creating art.

I sure do! I listen to a wide variety of music.

What's the best thing about being an artist?

Seeing potential in everything.

What is your dream project?

Stay tuned..........I'm working on it!!
