High Artist Spotlight: Seyi Odukoya

Seyi Odukoya is an expressive acrylic painter. He studied art at the Lagos State Polytechnic, Lagos. Emerging with a distinct style that relies on visible and expressive brush works. As an expressionist artist, he uses bright and vivid hues to capture the spirit of his subject employing bold brush strokes that curves into melodious symphony and rhythm that creates soulful meditation for the viewers. One of his works featured in the 16 cityscape ideas from around the world by Mont Marte in Australia. He worked as an IT student at Dreams Art Academy under Gbenga Adeyemi Billyrose and also with Olubanji Osunrinade and Austin Ekhaiyeme of Culture Afrique. Some of his works adorn the walls of Nigeria Television Authority, Victoria Island, Iglesias Hotel, Surulere, Afren Energy, Victoria Island, Lagos. He is widely collected both in Nigeria, United Kingdom and the US.
We recently caught up with Seyi after High Art 2023 to learn more about his most recent inspirations:

Where do you find your creative inspiration?

My environment, people, places, etc.

Why do you do what you do?

I just love it...

What art/artist do you most identify with?

Expressionism.

What themes do you pursue the most?

Figurative and landscape.

What role does an artist have in society?

An artist is majorly an "interpreter" of the times, values, and happenings in the society in which he/she lives.

What is your artistic outlook on life?

Beauty.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Be passionate about what you do, Be consistent with it, Always strive to improve yourself, Don't compare yourself with others, Don't be afraid to make mistakes.

Do you listen to music while you are creating? If yes, share the song and artist that you listen to while creating art.

I love it quiet most times... And then can decide to play any jazz, blues, reggae, or gospel music.

What's the best thing about being an artist?

You get to see the world and people differently.

What is your dream project?

To keep creating.
